Contact the provider of your relative’s household insurance and let them know you plan to hire a live-in carer. Large insurers such as Aviva, Allianz, FBD, and AXA are familiar with live-in carers and au pairs, and will usually add the details to the existing policy, sometimes via an add-on.
Three Things to Bear in Mind
- Back injuries are the most likely accident, often while helping a relative move. ALHomecare strongly recommends a half-day patient moving and handling course for your carer (roughly €70–75) before she starts, which significantly reduces risk and strengthens your position if an injury does occur.
- Keep the home safe and hazard-free — check every room and the exterior, remove trip hazards, repair or replace poorly maintained equipment, and make sure smoke and carbon monoxide alarms work.
- Email your carer weekly to ask if everything is okay, address any issues raised, and keep the correspondence as a record.
In nearly 8 years and over 500 placements, no carer has taken legal action against an ALHomecare family. Following this advice puts you in a strong position as a diligent and responsible employer.
