COVID-19 is the infectious disease caused by a newly discovered coronavirus, first reported in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. With so much misinformation circulating, we wanted to share the facts and practical ways to manage the outbreak at home and at work.
How It Spreads
The disease spreads through small droplets from the nose or mouth when a person with COVID-19 coughs, sneezes, or exhales. These droplets can land on surfaces or be breathed in directly, which is why staying more than one metre away from anyone who is coughing or sneezing matters.
Common Symptoms
- Fever and tiredness
- Dry cough
- Aches and pains
- Nasal congestion or runny nose
- Sore throat
- Diarrhea
Most people (around 80%) recover without special treatment, but around 1 in 6 becomes seriously ill with difficulty breathing. Older people and those with underlying conditions like high blood pressure, heart problems, or diabetes are more likely to develop serious illness.
How to Protect Yourself and Others
- Wash hands regularly and thoroughly with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub.
- Maintain at least one metre of distance from anyone coughing or sneezing.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Cover coughs and sneezes with a bent elbow or tissue, and dispose of tissues immediately.
- Stay home if you feel unwell, and call ahead before seeking medical attention.
Staying informed through the WHO and local health authorities, and following their guidance on travel and gatherings, remains the best way to protect yourself, your family, and your community.
