Coronavirus (Covid-19) — Cocooning Tips

Monica O'Neill22 March 2019

During cocooning, older relatives and neighbours face changed routines, with family visits no longer happening. This age group is prone to loneliness and isolation, especially those living alone without internet access — and caring for mental health matters just as much as meeting food and prescription needs.

Check-in Calendar with Family Members

Creating a shared check-in calendar means each family member takes a turn checking in, so your loved one hears from everyone and no single person carries the whole load.

Positive, Uplifting Phone Calls

Keep calls upbeat — share what the kids have been up to, or recommend a show to watch together. Reassure your loved one that you’re managing well, even if things haven’t gone entirely to plan.

Group Video Calls and Helplines

Apps like Skype, Zoom, or House Party can host pub quizzes or games. Helplines such as Friends of the Elderly, Age Action Ireland, Seniorline, and ALONE also offer support for anyone feeling isolated.

Physical Activity and New Hobbies

Encourage home exercises or chair exercises even with limited mobility, and use the extra time to try a new hobby — arts and crafts, or a new recipe — that you can enjoy together and compare notes on afterwards.

If you feel your loved one needs professional care at home, ALHomecare is happy to discuss live-in care options with you and your family.
