I’ve seen more than 500 carers start their placements, and here are a few tips for a successful relationship with your carer.
- Orientation — show the carer around the home, how appliances work, meal preferences and times, medication schedules, and which day(s) she is off duty. Stick a timetable on the fridge.
- Introductions — sit together over tea so your relative and carer feel reassured you are committed to making this work.
- Settling in — give the carer time to adjust, show her the area, explain transport options, and make sure she has your number and the address saved.
- Keep your eye on the ball — check in regularly and keep communication open.
- Early intervention — tell ALHomecare early if something isn’t working, so we can help get it back on track.
- Read the contract — it contains a lot of useful information; ask us if anything is unclear.
- Dealing with the paperwork — start registering as an employer at the end of the first week, and make sure timesheets are filled in weekly.
- Read your family starter pack before the placement begins — email info@alhomecare.ie if you haven’t received it.
- Appoint one family member as the main point of contact for the carer.
